As I read the required books and reflect on the program we are in, I think about all the leadership imperatives we must face. Are there any easy solutions to the problems we encounter? Everything seems so complicated and difficult to deal with. Sometimes, it feels very over-whelming dealing with all the day to day situations we encounter in the school house. It is the responsibility of the leader to build capacity so the person replacing him or her do so with confidence. Leaders must build capacity in all willing personnel. We never know who among us will turn out to be the next great leader of our time. Remember the story of King David. None of the soldiers on the battlefield ever imagined that David could beat Goliath. What the battlefield soldiers didn't know was that the greatest leader of all time was building leadership capacity within David. He taught David how to fight the bear and the lion while protecting his father's sheep. He was learning stretegies and having conversations with the Lord. God prepared David for for his future leadership situations and challenges. We should do the same as Godly leaders in education. We need to prepare all people for the leadership possibilities. Here is a link about capacity building. http://pdonline.ascd.org/pd_online/secondary_reading/el200205_lambert.html

Your question about leadership is interesting. When I initially read it, I began to think of Biblical leaders. I began to think, leadership is only complicated if one attempts to do it without divine guidance. The choir sang one of my favorite hymns this morning, "Order my steps in your word.” Truly, the issues leaders must grapple with today are complex; however, the solutions demand divine, inspired wisdom. Discipline, synthesis, creativity, respect and ethics coupled with a desire and willingness to collaborate will enhance the effectiveness of leaders.
